First Facebook Hate Message Ever...

The facebook has once again shown what it can do: it is good at connecting political foes.

Nathan Jung, a English Major, decided to take time out of his busy schedule (I am sure he does have a lot to read) to write a long message where he calls me a "douchebag", a "contrarian knob", and a "tool".

Well, thanks Nate, for the high level of intellectual vigor in your message. See, that is what is wrong with the anti-war liberals on this campus, they resort to these kind of tactics far too early in an argument. Instead of attacking the essence of the super-liberal article about me (which takes a couple hours of conversation, meetings, and e-mails and mulls it down into a couple dozen quotes and a short bio), he decided to use ad-hominin attacks. Nice job buddy!

To the frequent readers of this Blog, this is a common anti-war student on this campus: rude, inarticulate, and they have a tendency to resort to personal attacks when confronted with anything that is not in line with their world view.

It really says a lot for the marketplace of ideas on this campus. It seems that if anyone opens up a new shop with some new ideas, the liberals decide to firebomb it. Debate on this campus is limited to liberals and socialists while conservative thought is squashed out at every turn. Nate's message is an example of this systematic approach of attacking anything they don't understand nor want to understand.

He goes on to say " you come off as a total parrot" and " I am neither a "hippy", nor a "liberal", in your terms."

Nate, just know that because I am a good Christian, I still love you as my brother and like I would with my brother I am going to tell you the honest truth: you are a hippy-liberal; your message proves it. Thank you for being an example for the rest of your cause: out of touch with nothing to add to the debate.

One exception: At least Bill (a frequent poster), who is some kind of non-voting anarchist, doesn't resort to name calling.

P.S. If this was any other week, I wouldn't have posted on this, but it is exam week, and I am in a fightin' mood. I will post any future Nate-type messages in the comments section of this post.

P.S.S. Who the heck sends a facebook hate message anyway?

"Some kind of non-voting anarchist..."

If you are an Anarchist, you don't vote (despite what some anarcho-liberals might try telling you...)

I'm still wondering what exactly a "hippy" is, because I have been labelled as such by innumerable people, yet none can seem to give me a systematic explanation of what defines a "hippy."

I have actually recieved hate mail for my Jim Doyle paradoy, from both a liberal and a conservative.

Here is Nate's latest reply:

Talk about posturing... If those liberals set a trap for you, boy, you sure fell for it. Was the flag their idea? I reserve the right to use Facebook, by the way, for any purposes I see fit. You made the choice to be a public persona, not me, so don't be surprised if someone calls you out on foolish comments made in print. Maybe Rae was falsely portrayed as a "kind, motherly" type, but it's just as likely she came off better because her politics center on actual issues, not some imagined, spiteful right/left divide. Maybe she came off better because she's not a puffed-up undergraduate with vanity in her eyes and a chip on her shoulder. And while we're playing make-believe: maybe "Operation: Sweet, Dude" will take your slightly-above-fifty percent 'mandate' mid-term. Maybe you persecuted white, male conservatives can finally find a place of your own, locating the fabled Conservatia of yore, where strawberry-flavored coffee drinks flow like surging rivers...and Maybe, just maybe, playing more patriotic music at political gatherings will prove that you are a true American. But I doubt it. The true American, as I've come to conceive him/her, refuses to denigrate those who don't agree with them, automatically equating political orientation with a lifestyle label, insultingly applied. The real American sees faults when faults exist and tries to fix them...in sharp contrast, of course, to pretending faults don't exist, have never existed, and will never exist (unless the other side gets their way). The real American is an innovator, a sharp builder of consensus, and a visionary...not a "pariot". Whatever happened to humility as a public virtue? Fuck, I don't know. Shout me down if you like, but this is the last you'll hear of it.

Actually, Nate was wrong about something. Only 31% of eligible voters voted for Bush, not 51%.

But he does sound kind of like a liberal version of Bob, if you ask me.

Still wondering what a "hippy" is...

Dictionary.com: A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.

So, most of the anti-war folks ARE hippies. Bill, you are a hippy as well because you "oppose and reject many of the standards and customs of society."

Nate's reply: An Olive Branch...
"I know I promised you'd have heard the last of me, but I feel the need to end this on a better note. I'm an essentially apolitical animal, and I rarely interact with individuals cited in the media, but to say your portrait in the Isthmus bugged me would be an understatement. So, I wrote the first message and subsequent rebuttal. I will offer an apology for the language therein, which wasn't gracious and, I think, served to obscure my intent. We will not agree on many issues, Bob, but the last thing I want is to generate ill-will between myself and you, based on totally non-personal issues. I wouldn't be at all opposed to a discussion, however, on your terms or my own. I wish you well, believe it or not, and offer particular thanks for reprinting my response verbatim on your blog (as opposed to 'pulling an isthmus')."

It's tough to be a 20-something know-it-all and be called a 20-something know-it-all whether you're a nascent Facist or Commie.

Sometimes it's better to wait for some experience to temper your convictions.

You need thicker skin, Bob if you're going to stand up and bait folks.

That's all welland good, grumps, but nothing Bob did could be construed as "baiting," unless the exchange "Hippies are dumb," "Nuh-uh, Republicans are war criminals" to only be offensive in one direction.

Steve S-

How would you define LEFT-WING vs RIGHT-WING?

Just wondering...?

"anti-war left on the wrong side of history"

"open-minded liberals"

"stupid comment of the month"

Let's face it, this entire site is about baiting, and so are Bob's politics. That's why he'll say something like "i'm in a fighting mood", when there's no one to fight. My original (still unposted) message had mostly to do with letting Bob know that he came off poorly in the article - the isthmus was looking for a neo-con patsy, and they totally found one. I pointed it out as something which he might want to look out for if he has political aspirations. True to form, this makes me a 'liberal hippy', which, of course, means absolutely nothing (there's your definition, Bill). This also, apparently, makes me anti-war. What was that about ad hominem arguments? In any event, he gave them the narcissistic fool they were looking for, and probably one-upped them in some respects. Great job, dude.
