Another Anti-Recruiting Protest

I am really starting to get sick of these anti-ROTC, anti-recruiting protests. The latest one is planned for December 6 at 2pm at Library Mall. Once again, they are saying they are "for the troops", yet this is yet another example in a long list of anti-troop activities they have been involved in over the last year and a half.

Let's mobilize on Dec 6 to counter the military's ability to wage its illegal war and to support the right of universities to oppose military recruiting on their campuses.

Once again, these hyper-liberals have mixed up the issues. Military Recruiting on campuses give students an opportunity to join the military. These anti-troop folks are committed to denying students on OPPORTUNITY to join the armed services.

What angers me even more that trying to get recruiting off of campus is their attemps to force ROTC off of campus. This university prides itself on allowing students to major and minor in just about every possible educational pursuit (like Latin, a dead language), yet they are against students taking Military classes. These hyper-liberals are nothing more than hypocrites.

How can these people say they are "for the troops" yet they protest soldiers at recruiting stations and future soldiers on campuses across the country. Maybe instead of protesting these soldiers, you should thank them for protecting your right to be a moron. While your at it, find a OIF Vet and thank them for putting their life on the line in a war that you call worthless, see how they feel about that!

Anti-Recruiting = Anti-Troop. This is true for two reasons. First, you assume that people are getting "tricked" into joining the Military. Thus, you assume that YOU are smarter than millions of active duty and reserve military members and WE are all stupid for having signed up. We don't need your help, please use your massive intellect to cure cancer or something. The second reason why protesting the Army Recruiting Center is anti-troop is because you ARE PROTESTING SOLDIERS. The people in that office are NCOs (feel free to google that term now because most anti-troop folks don't know how the military runs anyways) and they are under orders to be there. You are protesting SOLDIERS!! Just say that you are anti-troop and stop this game. You look stupid doing it and it is kind of embarrassing.

Example of a flier for the anti-troop protests.

Nope. Anarchist.

No war but the class war...

Love Me, I'm a Liberal
By Phil Ochs

I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I'm glad the commies were thrown out
Of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
As long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crane?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I read New Republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the democtratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Its a song. Phil Ochs was a famous folk singer during the 70s. He called himself a "topical commentator"

Here's another good song of his. When he performed this one, he said "You know its a protest song, because they never play it on the radio"

I'm sure Bob will like this one, since its about a soldier.

I Ain't Marching Anymore
By Phil Ochs

Oh I marched to the battle of New Orleans
At the end of the early British war
The young land started growing
The young blood started flowing
But I ain't marchin' anymore

For I've killed my share of Indians
In a thousand different fights
I was there at the Little Big Horn
I heard many men lying
I saw many more dying
But I ain't marchin' anymore

For It's always the rich to lead us to the war
It's always the poor to fall
Now look at all we've won with the sabre and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all?

For I stole California from the Mexican land
Fought in the bloody Civil War
Yes I even killed my brother
And so many others
And I ain't marchin' anymore

For I marched to the battles of the German trench
In a war that was bound to end all wars
Oh I must have killed a million men
And now they want me back again
But I ain't marchin' anymore

For It's always the old who lead us to the war
It's always the young to fall
Now look at all we've won with the sabre and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all?

For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky
Set off the mighty mushroom roar
When I saw those cities burning
Then I knew that I was learning
That I ain't marchin' anymore

Now the labor leaders were screamin' when they closed the missile plants,
United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore,
Call it "Peace" or call it "Treason,"
Call it "Love" or call it "Reason,"
But I ain't marchin' any more.
No I ain't a marching any more.

So he thinks the war of 1812 was unjust? Weren't we on the Defense?

Bill:

Anarchist implies that you are, in fact, a hyper-liberal - anarchism is about as far left on the political spectrum as you can go.

But you contradict yourself. "No war but the class war" makes you a Communist, rather than an anarchist. I'm sure you've noticed that the anarchists - who just want to be left the hell alone - have little in common with the Communists - who want to tell everyone else what to do (at least in the short-term through the "dictatorship of the proletariat") - except for a dislike of the current regime and conservatives more broadly.

Get your terms right.

Steve S-

An Anarchist is not the same thing as a Libertarian. Anarchists are anti-authoritarian. We are NOT liberals. We believe in the liberation of humanity (and in some cases the liberation of ALL animals... humans included) from the tyranny of the state, which includes capitalism.

An Anarchist is a revolutionary. A US-style Libertarianism is a right-wing form of liberalism (or liberalism in the classical sense) They are NOT revolutionaries.

Authoritarian Communism certainly does lead to the rise of a totalitarian state, as Mikhail Bakunin (Russian Anarchist) predicted in the 1860s, just from working along side Karl Marx and his followers in the first Wworkingman's International Union.

Anarchists certainly can be Communists (Libertarian Communists) in the sense that Anarchists work for the self-emancipation of the working class from wage-slavery.

That is why I said "No War But the Class War." The State is the basis of the ruling class oppressing us, which is why I seek to smash the state.

fight fight fight for revolution,
break break break the social scheme,
oh we'll drag the bastards down,
and we'll grind them in the ground,
and replace them with a working-class regime!

so if you hate the working-class,
but you'd like to save your ass,
you'd better give your money to the poor...
or we'll sell your mother's twat
to a sailor on her yacht,
and turn your favorite daughter
to a whore!

I have to agree that we the armed services should be free to recruit on campus. 18 year olds should be able to make up their own minds.

You know a lot of liberals fought in earlier wars. The war that really made non-pacifist liberals so anti-military was Vietnam. (For whatever reason - it is a common misconception that Vietnam was fought with poor, blue-collar grunts - plenty of white-collar, college bound young men died there too.) I really don't know why there are so few liberals in the military today but I believe that some of the reason is that they are being forced out and made to feel unwelcome by the military culture at large.

I hate to say it but we need to bring back the draft - with few or no deferments, so that the military really represents a random cross-section of citizen soldiers - like the military did in WWII. Since post-Vietnam, America has slowly been developing a conservative Military class.

This military class with their own agenda and political allegiances is becoming unmanageable by any executive who does not share their world view. Look at the trouble Clinton had in Bosnia. Luckily there, military professionalism overrode culture politics - but it might not next time. Look at the "chrisitian" facists now in the Air Force Academy who will be running that branch of the armed services in 10 or 20 years. The next left-leaning commander-in-chief may well be overthrown in a military coup.

Bob I know that that you're thinking "And how is that a bad thing?!?!" - but be careful what you wish for.
